A Star for Every Member

SEASON 20 IS ALL ABOUT THE MUSICIANS

As we enter our twentieth year, we reflect on the thousands of musicians with whom we've shared the stage. This year, we celebrate the past, honor the present, and plan for the future. Each of the 115 musicians is represented in our Season 20 logo. And that's just the start.

RANGE OF EXPERIENCES

Our musicians get to experience playing music, following the conductor, and performing for the crowd from different vantage points during their study with us.

Professional

MUSIC AND ITS INDUSTRY

CYO artists learn what it's like to be a professional musician thanks to our annual concert series, Music and It's Industry. Students have been in Broadway orchestra pits, motion picture soundtrack crews, and cartoon recording sessions.

CYO invented this type of collaboration.

And we guarantee that you've never experienced anything like it. Every year, we invite the world's biggest music legends to share the stage with our amazing musicians.

Graham Nash, Pat Benatar, Styx, Jon Anderson - we've performed with them. The ever-growing list gets more impressive every season and we're not even close to being done.

Stay tuned for more information about Season 20's collaboration.

An Involved Founder

CYO is different because our Founder and Executive Director Liza Grossman is still deeply involved with our organization.

The best educator in the business.

STRAD magazine called Liza “a master of tutelage...” That’s an understatement. Her student musicians are the real beneficiaries of her skill with the stick and the score. They don’t just get excited to perform - they learn; they grow; they flourish.

Her energy is radiant and infectious and she gives it freely to every student in her orchestras. She is the founding Music Director of the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, conducting faculty at Interlochen Center for the Arts and co-founder of the Interlochen Arts Camp Junior Advanced String Institute. She is guest director of colleges and youth orchestras across the country.

Liza has worked with some pretty amazing people in some spectacular places, too: Blossom Music Center. Severance Hall. Nautica Stage. Interlochen. Liza has conducted major artists performing major works on these stages and more, including 20 world-premiere concertos performed by members of the Cleveland Orchestra, nationally recognized musicians and prominent jazz artists. She has conducted more than 300 orchestral world premieres, all with the composers present, including Bernard Rands, Robert Ward and Joan Tower. She is the touring conductor for Styx when they perform with orchestras around the country.
